CHRIS LO, 24
SAN FRANCISCO, CA
This week we sat down with San Francisco based designer, techie and extreme night owl, Chris Lo. With one glance, it’s obvious that Chris is a guy full of passion. Riding around on his electric skateboard, he is just one of those people that exudes excitement and creativity in everything he talks about. Who would have guessed that he grew up in Jersey?
DESCRIBE YOUR DAY JOB.
I'm a product designer. Currently, I'm a freelancer but am hopefully locking down this pretty awesome design job. Fingers crossed.
HOW DO YOU START EACH MORNING?
Well, the sun coming up is usually the sign that it’s time to call it a night for me.
NAME SOME FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT THE PLACE YOU LIVE.
Professionally, there's no better place to be for tech right now. I like that San Francisco is a city where nature is so accessible too. Plus, I live near such good food and open minded people.
IT'S SATURDAY, WHAT ARE YOU USUALLY DOING?
The thing is, my Saturdays have changed recently. Usually, it's brunch, Dolores Park and nature, with the guys. Recently it's been about dating. The same things though, but with the ladies. I like being out in nature; the Headlands, Marin, Dolores.
TELL ME ABOUT THE BEST MEAL YOU'VE HAD.
My parents were in town two weeks ago and we went to Atelier Crenn. The menu there is laid out like a poem and each line represents a different meal from the tasting menu. We did the two hour dining experience and it was so good. I've been to some of the top restaurants in New York City but this was my favorite meal. The portions were perfect and so was the atmosphere.
TOP FIVE THINGS YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT
Let me pull up my OKCupid, I'm pretty sure I've answered this question before. Okay. My camera, Google Maps, Boba Guys, my vision, my phone and Bordeaux cookies. Those are the best cookies. The butter and the salt…
DO YOU READ ANYTHING RELIGIOUSLY?
Not really. I just started reading Kinfolk actually. I used to just read it for the photography but the themes that they pick are really fucking good. I'm currently reading "Hard Things about Hard Things" by Ben Horowitz and I just finished "Zero to One" which was really good by, Peter Thiel. I'm actually reading Amy Poehler's new book too. I'm not a huge fan of hers but this book is so funny.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST RELATIONSHIP WITH TEA?
My parents probably. My mom used to make a lot of Oolong teas growing up and every night at dinner, I remember drinking, Sobacha, this buckwheat tea.
IF I STOLE YOUR PHONE, WHAT MUSIC WOULD I FIND ON IT
I just got back into The Shins. I've been rehashing a lot of old playlists recently. So, there's some of The XX and Phantogram. Definitely some Kanye.
YOU'RE STRANDED ON AN ISLAND… WHAT'S YOUR DRINK OF CHOICE TO BE STUCK WITH?
My new addiction is this raw coconut water, where it says on the small bottles, "Can you find a pink one?". Marketing, right? So, probably that or Revive Kombucha.
WHAT WAS ON THE FIRST MIXTAPE YOU EVER MADE FOR SOMEONE?
I don't remember the first one that I made. It was for sure in 7th or 8th grade and had something like Death Cab for Cutie or Bright Eyes on it. Those emo days.
PHONE APPS YOU'RE CURRENTLY ADDICTED TO...
I've been religiously using this app call Head Space. It's a meditation app started by a white guy with a shaved head but it's so well designed. Also, I mean, Instagram.
